What is Domestic Violence?

Battering and abuse is a pattern of behavior that one individual uses to establish power and control over another.  Domestic violence is classified as the abuse of  spouses, dating partners,  live in partners, children and elders.  Abuse is not only physical but also includes, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures, religions, ethnicities, classes and educational backgrounds.

· 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their life.

· The highest rate of domestic violence occurs in young women between the ages of 16– 24.

· 13% of teen girls who have been in a relationship report being hit.

· 26% of teen girls in a relationship report enduring repeated verbal abuse

· A study of 8th and 9th graders found that 25% has been victims of nonsexual dating violence and 8% had been victims  of sexual dating violence.

· Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in relationship report that their boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm when presented with a breakup.

· 1 in 4 teen girls who have been in a relationship report that they were pressured into performing oral sex or engaging in sexual intercourse.
