Introduction

Personal Health and Wellness can be achieved through a holistic approach.  Holistic Wellness includes the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual affects on an individual. To achieve holistic wellness, one must learn how to balance all aspects of life that make up the whole person. 

In this project, you will work together in groups and create a holistic wellness plan for an individual that needs your help!  



Task

 

 

Rebecca is a 35-year woman.  She is 5’8 inches tall and weighs 165 lbs. She has been working for the past seven years as a lawyer and leads a very busy life. She rarely exercises and eats a lot of quick fast food meals and frozen dinners. Rebecca is single and has not dated in several years. She used to have lots of friends and spent time with them on the weekends but she has lost touch with them over the years. Rebecca also enjoys spending time on the weekends hiking and camping in the mountains but since her career has become more complex, she spends little time doing leisurely activities. Rebecca recently found out that she has high blood pressure and runs a risk of developing heart disease.  This alarming news has convinced her that she needs to make a change in her life.  Rebecca would like to improve on the following aspects and create balance in her life:

·        Eating Healthy and Lowering blood pressure

·        Reducing the amount of stress in her life

·        Meeting new friends

·        Finding resources for emotional support

·        Developing an exercise program that she enjoys.

·        Making changes in her career to make more time for a social life.

 

Rebecca needs your help. In groups of five you will create a personal wellness plan for her.  Each person in your group will take on the role of a professional and help Rebecca take a more holistic approach to life and wellness.

 

Process

 

The class will work on Rebecca’s holistic wellness plan in groups.  You will have the opportunity to sign up for one of the following positions within your group:

1.     Nutritionist: Design a diet for Rebecca that helps fight heart disease and determine if she is facing any other health risks.

2.     Personal Trainer: Design a workout plan for Rebecca that is enjoyable and will help her reach her personal goals.

3.     Stress Counselor: Analyze what is causing stress in Rebecca’s life. Develop plan that includes several options for to relieve stress.

Product Requirements:

 

*Your final product will be a client portfolio for Rebecca. It will include impute from all five professionals in the group and create a holistic wellness plan for Rebecca. Remember you are professionals. Your work should be well researched and accurate.

Portfolio Requirements:

q       A comprehensive definition of Holistic Health

q       At least one word-processed, double-spaced page of role specific information from each member of the group.

q       Effective use of visual graphics, borders, bullets and colors

q       Accurate APA citation within text

q       Accurate APA reference list citing all sources

q       Correct Spelling and Grammar.

q       Valid and well researched information. 

 

Step 1:

You will be assigned to groups of four.  Within your group, each of you will choose the role of nutritionist, personal trainer, stress counselor or social coordinator. 

 

Step 2:  Work Day One:

You will use the links above under your chosen role to explore information and develop your portion of the portfolio.

 

Step 3:

You will have two additional work days in your group

 

Work Day Two: Each student will present their information to the rest of their group. You will fill out evaluation forms for each member of the group, as well as a self-evaluation based on the quality of information presented.

 

Work Day Three: Your group will work together in the computer lab, compiling data and creating your portfolio. Each of you must have your final draft of your portion of the project as your ticket to class on this day.

 

Step 4:

Class evaluation: Each portfolio will be displayed in class. Part of your individual grade will be to closely examine each portfolio and fill out an evaluation. The portfolios will be displayed throughout the school to promote holistic health.

This project was developed for the 2002, Colorado State University, Consumer and Family Studies, Content Methods course.  This Webquest was developed for an 11-12th grade Life Management class; however it would be beneficial in other content areas as well.

 

The focus of this Webquest is holistic health, which encompasses an individual’s emotional, physical, mental and spiritual self.  Students will be able to use the skills learned in this Webquest to create balance in their lives and help friends and family in need.

Content Standard:

 

4 The student will analyze and demonstrate behaviors which contribute to a healthy lifestyle. 

          4.02 Assess the nutritional needs of special groups and persons in different stages of the life cycle. 

          4.07 Maintain balance between personal/family wellness.

          4.08 Assess the benefits of physical exercise.

          4.08 Maintain preventative health practices.

 

 

Product Requirements and process:

Note to teacher: Be sure to give discuss with students your personal definition of professionalism and what you expect from them in your class.

Note to Teacher on Choosing Groups: This project is a great opportunity for students to get to know each other. Choose groups carefully and try to put students in groups with various interests.

Note to teacher: This project assumes that all students will have time outside of class to do research. Modify the class time based on computer availability of the students.

Class evaluation: Each portfolio will be displayed in class. Part of the student’s individual grade will be to closely examine each portfolio and fill out an evaluation. The portfolios will be displayed throughout the school to promote holistic health.  

Note to Teacher: Choose ways to recognize students work based on circumstances. If you have a class website, post the results for students, parents and other members of the community to see.

Resources needed:

·        Library resources: Prepare a library cart for research work day.

·        Computers with internet connections for each student.

·        Minimal Computer Skills, One instructor is sufficient.
