Introduction

As a teenager, it is rare that you are in complete harmony with your parents.  To make it even more complicated, your parents did not receive an instruction manual when you were born on how to parent perfectly.  Well, you now have the opportunity to change some things around.  What if your parents had an instruction manual for you on how to parent perfectly!  This is your job…to prepare that manual.

Task

You will be creating a “Parenting 101” brochure on Microsoft Publisher based on personal preference AND research about parenting.  You will be logically applying concepts learned from parenting theories to your family lifestyles.

Process

*      You will examine the specified websites and:

*      Determine factors affecting family relationships.

http://www.focusas.com/Parenting.html

*      Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques for different family situations.

http://www.focusas.com/ListeningSkills.html

*      Investigate strategies for dealing with individual and family issues

http://www.focusas.com/EmotionalHealth.html

http://www.focusas.com/Adolescence.htm

*      Upon research on the listed websites, your job is to create a brochure in Microsoft Publisher giving your parents advice on parenting YOU.

*      Think about things that affect the relationship between you and your parents…

*      What might be the cause of conflict?

*      What might be the answer?

*      What suggestions do you have for your parents that might help them figure you out?

*      OR what advice might you give them to help them out, stuff you’ve learned about parenting from the websites provided?

*      You do not have to answer these questions!  They are there only to spark some ideas.  The assignment should include personal opinions about how your parents should change their parenting style SUPPORTED by quotes and facts from the research you’ve done.

*      You will have a total of three class days in the computer lab.  I suggest you research for at least a day on the websites, and then the other two days I suggest you start your Publisher document.  I will be doing a brief demonstration on how to use Microsoft Publisher on the second day out of the three days in the lab at the beginning of the hour.  You should all have experience with Publisher already, so the demonstration will be brief and intended as a reminder.

*      You will be turning in the completed brochure in 2 weeks!!  Get started and HAVE FUN, this might be your only opportunity to tell your parents how to parent!

Evaluation

The brochure will be worth 100 points.  I have a rubric attached to show exactly what I am looking for.  Please click here to see the requirements.

Conclusion

As you are creating and finishing your parenting guides think about what you’ve learned.   For 25 points extra credit, I would like you to answer the following questions in a 1 page paper (DUE Friday after brochure is due):

*      How has your opinion changed about the rules your parents make for you?  Do you find relevance in their guidelines they make for you?  WHY?

*      Were there any distinct theories or similarities you saw between your parent’s behaviors and the research you read?  WHICH ones were and which ones were completely opposite?

*      What have you learned about yourself and your own development at this age?  Are there any hypothesized reasons from the research for your actions and behaviors?  WHICH ones?
