Get
ready to become experts! With so many
childcare options out there how can families decide which service to
choose? Many families do not have time
to research all the different types of childcare services and their children
sometimes end up in bad situations or the parents put their children in a service
which they cannot afford. You are tired
of hearing about children being abused or neglected at daycare centers and you
are tired of hearing friends and family complain about the amount of money they
spend on childcare. You will be a member of a committee of experts from each
type of childcare service and, as a group, will decide which childcare option
you would recommend to the family.

You
will be divided into groups and assigned one of the following families to
help. Your task will be to produce a
brochure highlighting the pros and cons of the different types of child care
options as well as deciding which childcare option you would recommend to the
family.
The
Families:
Paul
and Michelle Smith:
3 children ages 4, 2, and 6 months.
Dad works Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
Mom works Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The family lives close to one set of grandparents but the
grandmother has recently been in the hospital 3 times for accidents that
occurred while at home.
Dad makes $30,000 and mom makes $35,000 per year.
Jack
and Jackie Jackson:
4 children ages 3 (triplets) and 13 months.
Dad works Monday through Friday 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Mom works Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The closest relatives are an aunt and uncle who both work
6:00 p.m. - 4:00 a.m.
Dad makes $27,000 and mom makes $10,000 per year.
Steven
Hawkins
2 children ages 3 and 2
Dad works Saturday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Mom is deceased and there are many supportive family
members living close by.
Dad makes about $43,000 per year.
Betty
Jenkins
1 child age 2
Dad sees child on weekends
Mom works Sunday through Friday 4:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.
Mom makes $23,000 per year and receives $300 per month in
child support.

Each
member of your group will need to sign up to become an expert on one of the
following childcare services. With your
assigned families in mind, decide which option would be best for your family. You need to:
Research daycare centers, preschools, family care
providers, nannies or aupairs, or stay at home parents.
Find five pros and five cons of each option.
Analyze the costs of each type of childcare and decided
which option would be best for your family and why that is the case.
