You have just been awarded a job as a dietician’s
assistant. Your advisor, Dr. Patricia
Smith is completely bogged down with all her new clients. She desperately needs your help planning
nutritious meals for some of her clients.
Dr. Smith hired you because she knows you have taken teen challenges and
choices and life management which taught you about the benefits of eating a
variety of healthy foods. She is
counting on you so don’t let her and her clients down!

Task
Dr. Smith would like you to make a family meal plan
for the Barnett’s. The Barnett’s have
one child and one on the way. Both Cindy
and Phil work full time jobs and are very active in the community. The Barnett’s are requesting a three dinner
plan that will meet the needs of all
the members of the family. They only
have time to cook one dinner a night so this one meal needs to have all the
essential nutrients for each person in their different life stages and health
restrictions.
Phil- Is
32 years old and has high cholesterol.
Cindy- Is
28 years old and is pregnant with her second
child.
Robbie- Is
4 years old and is a very picky eater.
He dislikes broccoli and is allergic to peanuts.
As Dr.
Smith’s assistant you will be responsible for creating a brochure that provides
the Barnett’s with a shopping list, a menu for the three dinners, and a
description of the health benefits of each meal. This brochure will be completed in Microsoft
Publisher and will be visually stimulating and easy to understand. These meals should be complete and give each
member of the family the nutritional value they need. Be creative and make it something you think
the Barnett’s would like to eat!

1.
Get in groups of 2
or 3. Remember to work with people that
you feel will contribute the most to this project, your best friend might not
be the best person to work with.
2.
Search the
provided websites for information on healthy ways for families to get all the
nutrients they need. Keep in mind that
Phil has high cholesterol, Cindy is Pregnant, and Robbie is a growing child.
3.
Make a list of
food items that will be necessary for the Barnett’s and their quest in
achieving a healthy diet.
4.
With these essential items create a tasty meal plan
that will be healthy and enjoyable to eat.
5.
Create a brochure
in Microsoft Publisher that is aesthetically pleasing and consists of three
sections.
A menu which gives a detailed ingredient list
for three dinners that will satisfy the nutrition needs of the family. These meals should taste good and contain a
variety of foods as well as a variety of types of foods i.e. Italian, Mexican,
Asian….
A shopping list for the necessary items the
Barnett’s would need to purchase.
Create a nutritional benefits description that
describes 3 foods listed in the shopping list that have a specific health
benefit. You should pick one food item
for each member of the family and describe the nutritional benefits of that
food. Example: Cindy will benefit from
an increase in lean red meats like beef because of the
high iron content. Iron is needed to
support the immune system and make enough blood for the developing fetus.
6.
On a separate word
document list the websites you used from the list provided by Dr. Smith. Keep reading to find the Websites Dr. Smith
thinks will help you in your quest to help the Barnett’s and their eating
habits.

Websites to Visit
Dr. Smith has provided you with some websites to aid
you in picking appropriate food choices for the Barnett’s. All you need to do is click on the website
address or the words that describe it in order to feast on all the nutrition
and health news on the internet. If you
would like to explore nutrition with
Nutrition Exploration
click here. Hint: go to the parents corner , click on food
guide pyramid, click on a food group, click on serving sizes, this will allow
you to type in any age to get information about what that person should eat at
that stage in their life. Also you could
click on nutrient comparisons to see what foods have the most healthy things in
it. If you want to learn more about the
food guide pyramid go to Keep

cholesterol and how to reduce it click on the word cholesterol. This website will help you plan foods that would
benefit Phil. In order to help Cindy

Dr. Smith would like to thank you immensely for your
contribution to her company. Your hard work
is paying off because the Barnett’s are feeling healthier than ever. If you
keep changing the lives of her clients, Dr. Smith is likely to promote you!!!
Now that you have helped the Barnett’s with their
eating habits you can look at your own food choices and modify them to be more
nutritionally complete. With all the
knowledge you have gained you have the power to live a very healthful life and
influence others to so as well!!! Great
job, keep up the good work.
